About CEUs

We are accepting CEU applications on a rolling basis. The CEU Guidelines provide all the necessary information to apply. Please try to submit at least six weeks before the event. For more information, contact Marcia Farris at 978-654-6053.

One continuing education credit (CEU) represents 10 hours of education provided either in a training series format, an integrated experience at a conference, or a distance learning experience following a prescribed curriculum.

The Massachusetts Association for the Education of Young Children is the nation's first professional association to approve early childhood related courses and to grant CEU certificates to individuals who complete approved courses or conferences. MassAEYC is approved by the Department of Early Education and Care to issue these certificates and has been doing so for over 10 years.

CEU approval is a comprehensive process that requires a detailed application, review by a group of well qualified early childhood professional, and a follow-up evaluation of the course presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean when a course offers CEU credit?
When an early childhood course offers CEU credit, it has been approved by the Massachusetts Association for the Education of Young Children. Approval indicates that the course:

1.
Has been reviewed by a group of early childhood professionals.
2.
Actively involves you, the adult learner, in the learning process.
3.
Is developmentally appropriate for the age group of children served by the participants.
4.
Is taught by an instructor who meets MassAYEC minimum standards.
5.
Consists of a minimum of five hours of training (10 hours — one CEU). This means that the content is more extended and in-depth than ordinary workshops but requires less of a time commitment than a college course.

What can I do with my CEU certificate?
The Department of Early Education and Care regulations allow individuals to apply CEUs toward the fulfillment of their staff qualifications.

If you are applying to become certified as a Lead Teacher or Director by EEC, you may apply your CEU certificates toward those requirements. CEUs cannot be applied toward Child Growth and Development requirements. Check www.eec.state.ma.us for specific requirements or call 617-988-6600 and ask for the teacher qualification division.

How will I know if a course offers CEU credit?
Look for announcements in brochures or other course materials that the course has been approved to offer CEUs. Many early childhood conferences offer CEUs.

Many of the Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies in the state offer both real-time and distance learning courses that have been approved for CEUs. For a list of the state R&Rs, check www.eec.state.ma.us

What are some examples of CEU courses offered by the R&Rs?
Distance courses include: Recognizing Young Children’s Strengths and Needs in the Inclusive Child Care Environment; Ages and Stages of the School-age Child; A Caring Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers.

Real-time courses: Growing Your Child Care Business (both Family child care and center-based); Computer Technology in the Early Childhood Environment; HEALTHY Kids Move; The Trauma of Domestic Violence

What if I submit an application and it is not accepted?
The MassAEYC office will review your initial application. If there are omissions, you will be contacted to provide more information. Technical assistance will be provided to help prepare your application for review. If an application will never be approved without major revisions (i.e. lack of presenter qualifications, not enough hours, content or rigor of course not acceptable), your application fee will be refunded.
